Sara Murphy

Art Teacher & Mixed-Media Color Expressionist

I have always been a creative being.

My earliest and most enduring influence was my mother. She was an artist who welcomed me fully into her world. I still feel the ripples of her generosity moving through my life—in my classroom, in the workshops I teach, and in the way I invite others to create. Explore it. Try it. Discover it. Be courageous. Share your joy. These are the tenets I live by.

From an early age, I was drawn to fiber—sewing and crocheting as a way of thinking with my hands. Wire soon followed, becoming the foundation for nature-inspired jewelry designs. Stained glass proved transformative, offering an abundance of color in a three-dimensional space. Over time, I returned to sewing, creating my own clothing and costumes, and eventually hand-sewing sock creatures that carry both whimsy and warmth.

My exploration of materials has always been guided by an emotional response to color and a deep fascination with texture. Each medium offers a different conversation, a different way to listen and respond.

Throughout my life, sharing the creative process has been as important to me as the work itself—from making art with my mother, to a meaningful partnership designing jewelry with a dear friend, to creating stained glass and building a labyrinth with my husband. My happy place is found in making art together, sharing the joy of creation, and discovering those quiet, magical moments that emerge along the way.
